Old Home Day

Sylvan Beach, NY, September 16, 2012

sunny 66 °F

This morning we had breakfast with Ryan and Khristina at a local place in New Hartford. Casab's Cafe is right in the village, so we walked there on this gorgeous, early fall day. After breakfast it was time to get home because we had guests coming. Another Geneseo roommate, Mary Margaret, and her husband, Bill came down from Odgensburg. They were very interested in our 'living arrangements' and anxious to see our camper. We had a great visit and delicious lunch in Sylvan Beach at the Canal View Cafe. Too soon they had to leave.

The weather was great today, my favorite kind of weather. It was cool, in the 60s, with clouds and sun.

Happily Ever After

Utica, NY, September 15, 2012

semi-overcast 67 °F

Yesterday was a whirlwind day, starting off with ordinary tasks like laundry and cleaning. Then in the evening we had our nephew's wedding. This is Jon, Don's brother, Dick and Julie's son. The ceremony was held at the Masonic Community's Chapel, which is just a beautiful one. The stained glass windows are gorgeous especially with the sunlight streaming through. The minister who performed the ceremony was low-key and put everyone at ease, especially the bride and groom. It was a very nice ceremony with some different parts we had never heard before. The bride and groom looked beautiful, as did all the parents. After the ceremony we had a little time before the reception, so we spent it with Don's other brother, Bob and Dee. I think everyone at the reception had fun. There was dancing, food, a candy buffet, even slushies! The DJs even had disco balls for our added entertainment. Each table name was an attraction from Disney and our place cards were fast passes, very smart thinking, since Jon and Vicky are Disney fans. They had ear hats for the bride and groom and their cake topper was Cinderella and Prince Charming. They will be leaving for their Disney honeymoon on Monday. Now for the happily ever after!

It was cool, with highs only in the 60s and sun and clouds, but a nice day.

And they are off and pacing . . .

Sylvan Beach, NY, September 14, 2012

overcast 78 °F

Today was a busy day with lots to do. I had some shopping to do in the morning and Don had some errands to run. In the afternoon we brought a few items to the reception hall for tomorrow's wedding and then we had a party to go to. It was a union party for the New Hartford teachers and it was so much fun! We had a great time visiting with co-workers we hadn't seen in quite a while. Of course this just reinforced our happiness at being retired.

Then a stop at Ryan and Khristina's house for me to pick up my birthday present, a massage! Ahhhhhh, just what I need.
Tonight we went to Vernon Downs with Linda and Phil. Since it is Friday we had the buffet and bet on 10 races. Unfortunately no one won enough for the million dollar motorhome or cruise ship, so I guess we will all continue working at Disney. There were actually 13 races tonight, but we were all tired, so we didn't stay for them all. While we were at the racetrack a cold front came in with lots of wind and rain, but no thunder or lightning, so no races cancelled.

The temperature is dropping and will be colder tomorrow, but the rain should be done.
It was overcast all day with a high of about 78 and then rain in the evening.

We had a nice day today, starting out with breakfast at one of our favorite places, the Bagel Grove. Don followed that with a dentist appointment, but not me. In the afternoon we went to the movies and saw "The Odd Life of Timothy Green". I really liked it, it was a very nice story. Don thought it was a bit odd for him.

For dinner I chose the 99 Restaurant, where I had a hot, buttered lobster roll and it was wonderful!

Last year on my birthday we were in Denali National Park in Alaska, which was awesome, but this year was very nice in its own way. Don bought me flowers, my sons and brothers all called me and lots of others emailed, texted and wished me a happy birthday on Facebook. Thank you all!

The weather was beautiful. High 84° and sunny. Another hot and cold day, since it was 56° this morning.

Hot and Cold

Sylvan Beach, NY, September 12, 2012

sunny 83 °F

Brrr again this morning, so the furnace was on again for a bit. Then we went into New Hartford for breakfast at Panera with some retired teacher friends. Of course, we had fun, but we all agree that retirement is wonderful and we wouldn't want to be back in the classroom!
Don's cough is back, so he finally went to the doctor. It seems the diagnosis is allergy induced acute bronchitis. He was given a new inhaler and two new prescriptions, and we hope they will do the trick. While he was at the doctor's office I relaxed at Barnes and Noble, reading and taking advantage of their free wifi.
The bikes were on the truck and we took them to Marcy to ride the Canalway Trail along the Barge Canal. Today was a perfect day to ride, because it was warm and sunny. We started at the lock in Marcy and had our lunch there, then rode five miles to the Utica end, then the same five miles back. At the lock we were lucky enough to watch two beautiful boats, one a sail boat, one a huge yacht. It is always fun to watch boats go through the lock, so we stayed for the entire process. The yacht was from Turks and Caicos Islands and was heading south.

Don has gone out to play cards with his friends, so I will let you know tomorrow if he was a big winner and we can buy ourselves a cruise ship and sail around the world.
It was chilly again this morning, 51, but this afternoon I had to turn the air conditioning on because it got to 83 inside!! It was only for a little while until the sun started its decline. Great day, 83 and sunny.
